Weekly Photo Challenge: Temporary

Cereus Peruvianus

Night Blooming Cactus

Night Blooming Cactus1

Ten years ago I bought a small sickly looking cactus plant for $3 from the clearance shelf of a local garden shop. At the time I didn’t know that it was a night blooming Cereus Peruvianus Cactus. A few years after planting it in a pot I came out early one morning to find the most beautiful huge white flower blooming. By the time I returned from work it was closed and did not open again. The following year it again produced one beautiful white flower that only lasted for a few hours. As the years passed it continued to bloom once or twice a year but only producing one  or two blossoms. It is now six feet tall and to my surprise, this year it has bloomed three times, once producing 22 blossoms over a few days. I think of each short lived bloom as a temporary gift which makes it all the more beautiful and cherished.
